Originality stamp by rage1986 Originality stamp by rage1986
Thought I'd finally express my opinion :3

Nearly every detail we could think of is taken from Mother nature - yes, definitely. Nearly everything was already discovered before - yes, most likely. And ideas often may be VERY similar - sure, I totally agree with that.
But that means Nothing, because even with all this said and admitted, I DO see many original artists with unique ideas AND styles here. I do see, as well, very similar ideas realized in such ways, that "old" becomes totally "new" - mindblowing, eye-catching and RECOGNIZABLE new. That IS originality.
When out of the whole number of similar by their basic concepts beasts you see one and mistakelessly recognize - "Oh, that is =ahkahna's Taschevah!" or *trancymick's Sergals or ~beastofoblivion's Lockjaws or *pallanoph's Pallanophs. Are they "made" of parts of real life animals? Why sure thing! :3 Will you say that "there's nothing original here?" Out of the whole "sea" of four-legged, reptile-taled, fuzzy, maned predatoric feline-canine-reptile-dragon-like creatures I shall IMMEDIATELY recognize ~psycrowe's draekards and =MorisMontana's ethereals, just as well as I shall always see a "loupdrake" in someone else's creature and find out later, that this person is actually watching me X)

I dig it how some people include solely original ideas into "originality" conception, conveniently leaving out the realization point. I wonder what should this mean?..
"That idea is not original enough for me, and realization means nothing here, so I shall just copy and won't have to give any credits"? XD That's nice, way to go!

Many might say "You shouldn't have posted any of your oh so private and original creations online, if they are so dear to you!". Know what? You are absolutely right :3 But I am almost sure that I shall be right if I say the following... None of the artists, whose creatures got known and loved over time, could imagine, that things will be this way, when they were just starting their "artistic path". Speaking for myself, I may say for sure: if there was an opportunity to "delete" each and every trace of what is so important for me out of people's reach and memories - I would use it ) But now what? Must original artists just shut up and stop defending what they think is theirs because "they should have thought of the concequences before" and just deal with disrespect? Note please, I am not speaking of artists getting paranoid and running to extremes, but of the cases, when obvious copying is present and artist can very much prove it. I myself can name atleast 10 young artists, who are or were inspired by what I draw - but only trice I felt there was necessity to pay attention to the mentioned fact at all.

P.S. Oh, speaking of often used example of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Of course, you may say that there are a lot of copies of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and no one go drama about it. Three points:
1. HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT, WERE YOU THERE?
2. Da Vinci is dead, and who knows, maybe he would have been enraged, finding out that his marvelous creation is now just a part of pop-culture.
And 3 - when you see Mona Lisa, you ALWAYS know, that it is Da Vinci's creation. It maybe distorted and deformed, but no one will ever assign it as his own creation. And it is right.

P.S. II This is my fixed opinion which I shall hardly change even under a wall of flames. Also, I've never started any arguments with people, sharing opposite P.O.V. - personal opinion is personal opinion, deal with it.

right like a concept that was done two years ago is done again by someone else who gets a DD for it, when the person with the original concept does not. That's sad, and she thought she was being "original" without doing some research beforehand. I mean it was a nice piece, but the idea behind it was not. Anyways, nice stamp.

I personally don't see how you're flamed for this. Ignore them. They probably never heard of the word before or any word six syllables or above.

You have every right to be inflexible in your opinion, of course, but why would you advertise your opinion and then make a point of saying you don't really care about anyone else's? If that the case, why should I care about yours?

I don't mean that in a flamey way, of course. You seem braced for the worst, but frankly I have no strong feelings about it.

Well said!

Like Duckstapler said, being an artist is all about doing something that has been done before in your own way. That's what art is--representing existing things (people, objects, animals, places, ideas, feelings, etc) in a new and different way to get others to see it in a new way. Anything can be original if they go about it the right way, and it's all subjective anyway.

In fact, some of my favorite art/literature/etc. is that which takes an common cliche or overdone concept and still finds a way to make it new, interesting, and unexpected despite the fact that it's been done a million times before. It *is* possible, even with very common concepts.

Really, I think saying that originality is dead is the easy way out. By saying that it doesn't exist that gives you an excuse not to have to try.

Finally a stamp for me!

Most everything has been done before, but that's part of being an artist. You know, trying to put your own spin on something and make it feel new, even if the base concept has been done ten hundred times. It's all part of the job.

I'm tired of people saying 'originality is dead'; it's a concept rather than a tangible thing; it is impossible for it to die. Saying so is like saying nothing new will ever be invented, etc.

...A good bit of them are just using 'originality is dead' to justify their idea theft. :/

I dislike it when people also say that everything's not original, since it's been done before.
Seriously, just taking something and putting a new twist on it IS original. If there was no originality, art would cease to have any luster in society and we'd all stop doing it because it's the same old stuff. However, if you mine enough in the art world, you will find original diamonds. :)

What is sad is that apparently artists can't get exposure/recognition for their original creations without having to worry about people stealing and ripping them off. In other words, if you don't want your work, ideas, creations stolen, hey, just quit drawing altogether! Just wrong.

Originality can be a difference of opinion. There can never be one piece of artwork that everyone thinks is original.

There will always be two sets of people in the context, those who think: Oh, how original. I've never seen these before!
& another set that think: Hm. I've seen something like this before.
But of course, Original or "unoriginal" doesn't mean they can't be impressed by it still.

I don't mean any offense by this comment, I do appreciate your concept. :)

No no, you are absolutely right ) I do clearly realize, that everything is very subjective - but nevertheless, both sets of people do find some things, which are original for them. I find it very...uh, strange to say, that there can be nothing original at all.

lol- no no, I mean there are original works, it's just subjective to how a person perceives the work.
There will always be two sets of people just with a minority & majority.

Just saying ahead of time, I'm not trying to be offensive in any way.

You talk of originality but all the links you included show furry/dragon art (one of the most common types of art, on DA and elsewhere). There may be variations in each piece, that's true, but they all basically contain the same concepts/ideas.
Also, most of them don't really have an interesting pose, point of view, or even a background.

in my opinion, an original piece opens up people's mind to new ideas, make them think in ways they have never thought before, or at least show something that would be difficult to put in a common or overused category.

however, dragons, for some reason, kick ass no matter how overused they are. -_o

Everything is subjective, isn't it? ) Let's say first and foremost, that ALL dragons and dragon-like beasts mostly contain same concepts and ideas and it all comes to these variations you are talking about - they may make the creature look more or less interesting or unusual. These creatures I have showed here I personally find interesting (especially sergals - have you seen many shark-faced raptor-like anthro creatures, which would also have such charisma? I haven't) I have seen PLENTY and plenty of dragon/beast art but the creatures I name here stand out FOR ME, and I know, that not only me - I shall recognize them anywhere and anytime. But once again, everything is subjective.

However, even though we don't seem to share the same vision of originality, you do seem to support what the stamp stands for ;3

i replied to someone else, thought i make an actual comment though about it...

everything can be original, it's just people tend to look at the similarities as opposed to differences and accuse of it of not being original.

i'll probably get really long with this comment so i'll just stop there, but that's basically the main thing that gets me. also someone mentioned how, ppl also use the excuse of because nothing is original, that they purposely make unoriginal ideas, which is also bothersome.

truly though, whether people claim every idea is original, or everyone is a mary sue, there will always be some form of difference between everyone (unless copied on purpose lol) that will inevitably show that everyone and everything is original in some way.
